Air Commodore (Dr) Sanjay Sharma, who has the distinction of being the first Consultant Administration of the Armed Forces Medical Services, is an alumnus of Armed forces medical college, Pune and College of Defence Management, Secunderabad, where he underwent the prestigious Higher Defence Management Course and completed his Masters in Management Studies.He underwent training in Paediatrics from the prestigious Army Hospital Research & Referral Delhi and also holds a Post Graduate diploma in Sonography.He has represented the Indian Armed Forces Medical Services in the First International Conference on the Doctrine of the IDF held at Tel Aviv Israel. During his tenure as Commanding Officer of an Hospital in West Bengal trained 200 local women as “Community Health Activists”. He has formulated and run an Adolescence Health programme for the IAF called “Pragatipath” and has been working with specially abled children and has assisted their parents to form a Self Help Group “Samanvay”. He was instrumental in setting up of the Alcoholics Anonymous branch “Suhani Subha” and the Al-Anon branch “Mangalmay” in the IAF. He also carries the distinction of being the consultant architect of the Station Medicare Centre of Air Force Station Palam which has been designed by him. In recognition of his services, he was awarded Commendation by the Chief of Air Staff in 2013.His personal journey and firsthand experience of being a parent of a transgender child struggling with his identity has prompted him to seek voluntary retirement from the Indian Air Force and dedicate himself towards pursuance of his mission of working for the welfare of the Transgender community by raising awareness and providing holistic Health care to this marginalised subset of the society.
